Subjective Objectivity
Audio, data, and the attempt to make an inherently subjective experience objective.
If sounds are manufactured impersonally outside of a given space - based on objective criteria rather than emotion, memory, and other subjective experiences - how does that affect the relationship between sound and the space it is based on?
That was the question I set out to explore, using the space of Racetrack Playa (more specifically, the Grandstand) as a place to examine and base my sounds on.
The results of that experiment can be heard in the above sound file. Whether it evokes an emotional response, and one related to the Grandstand especially, remains to be seen. Listen, then think about these questions:
What do these tones say to you? What, if anything, do they remind you of? What is your emotional response; do you even have one at all?
